Kill Your Darlings seeks an editorial assistant to join the growing team in our Melbourne office. This is a paid, one day per week (or equivalent) internship position on a one-year contract (January–December 2018).
KYD is one of Australia’s most respected and influential online literary magazines, publishing regular curated content on our website, as well as facilitating events, workshops, podcasts, writing competitions and awards across Australia. Based in Melbourne, the magazine comprises of five other part-time staff. KYD prides itself on excellence in industry training; many former interns have been recruited to leading publishing houses and arts organisations.
A terrific opportunity exists for an ambitious person studying publishing and editing, or with a relevant degree and/or work experience, to undertake the role of editorial assistant.
Reporting to the editor, the editorial assistant will assist with commissioning, editing and publishing unique online content, sourcing images and liaising with authors and publishing contacts, and responding to pitches and submissions.
An ideal candidate will have an understanding of common editorial processes and conventions, some experience with WordPress and social media platforms, a familiarity with KYD’s tone and style and a strong interest in Australian culture, literary magazines and independent publishing.
Most of all, you must be hard-working, flexible and good-humoured, and enjoy the challenge of working for a small but nimble independent arts organisation.
This is a paid editorial internship position. The successful candidate will be remunerated $1000 each quarter, totalling $4000 for the year.
The editorial assistant position is equivalent to one day per week, spread throughout the week and with varying periods of greater or lesser workloads. The editorial assistant may be asked to work from KYD’s Footscray office on occasion, but work can also be done from home.
