Karl Ove Knausgård vs Matthew Reilly
The Last of Us vs Flappy Bird
Bertolucci vs Transformers
and of course…
Mad Men vs Here Comes Honey Boo Boo
Calling all culture vultures! If you’re spoiling for a pop culture fight, look no further than the Kill Your Darlings Highbrow vs Lowbrow Cultural Showdown: Round 2 at the upcoming 2015 Digital Writers’ Festival.
The first round of the Cultural Showdown was a highlight of the 2014 Emerging Writers’ Festival, but the debate still rages on – and now it’s time for the rematch.
Kill Your Darlings is a serious literary journal, but we’re also serious about popular culture. We bring these two passions together, forcing our favourite writers to decide – high or low culture? Six writers will defend their passion for culture, whether it be posh or trashtacular in nature. This is a chance to celebrate the books, games and films we love, binge on and obsess over.
Battling it out will be…
Angela Meyer defending highbrow books
Angela is the author of a collection of flash fiction, Captives, and the editor of the eerie anthology The Great Unknown.
Dan Golding defending highbrow games
Dan is a critic, academic, and the director of the Freeplay Independent Games Festival. Recently, Dan wrote and presented ‘A Short History of Video Games’ for ABC’s Radio National, and completed his PhD in games in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne.
Katie Williams defending lowbrow games
Katie is Killings’ gaming and technology columnist. She has written for numerous print and online gaming publications and in 2013 was co-director of the Freeplay Independent Games Festival.
Sian Campbell defending lowbrow film
Sian is a freelance writer and the Editor-in-Chief of Scum Mag.
